Mercedes-Benz Key Services — The Car vs Van Year Limit Explained

Mercedes-Benz is the most frequently asked-about make when it comes to year limits, and the most frequently misunderstood. The distinction between passenger car and commercial van coverage is genuinely important — and it is more favourable than most people expect. Mercedes Sprinter and Vito vans use a different IMMO generation from the NXP/Infineon chip architecture used in Mercedes passenger cars from 2014 onwards. Mercedes Group OBD equipment covers the Sprinter NCV3 (W906) and VS30 (W907) platforms for all-keys-lost up to 2018 — four years beyond the car limit. That covers a large proportion of working Sprinters on Central Scotland’s roads.

For passenger cars, the 2014 all-keys-lost limit applies to W204 C-Class and W212 E-Class and all subsequent generations. If your Mercedes was manufactured from 2014 onwards and you have no working keys, that job requires OEM manufacturer tooling not available to independent locksmiths — I tell you this upfront on the call. What is never restricted by year is spare key programming: if you have one working Mercedes key, I can add a spare for any model and any year via Mercedes Group OBD equipment. Mercedes Keyless-Go — the proximity entry system fitted across the C, E, GLC and GLE range — is a relay theft target. Central Scotland has seen increasing incidents with Mercedes SUVs and executive saloons. The countermeasure is straightforward: a Faraday bag for key storage, a steering wheel lock as a visible deterrent on higher-value models, and a non-keyless spare key programmed via Mercedes Group OBD equipment as a theft-resistant backup start method.
