How All-Keys-Lost Works — And Why It’s Different
An all-keys-lost job is the most technically demanding scenario in auto locksmith work. When no working key exists at all, a new key cannot be created by simple programming — because the vehicle’s immobiliser has no reference key to learn from. Instead, I read the vehicle’s IMMO data directly or generate the key from the VIN using the Dealer-grade OBD equipment Pro. The new key is then cut on-site, programmed to the vehicle and all previous key codes are overwritten in the ECU.
The ECU code deletion step is critical for security. Once the job is complete, any keys that previously started the vehicle — including lost or stolen ones — are permanently disabled. They may still physically fit the lock barrel but they will not start the engine. This is the same process a franchised dealer would follow, completed at your location rather than requiring recovery to a workshop. Police Scotland advises contacting a locksmith immediately if keys are stolen rather than waiting.
Two makes have year limits for all-keys-lost jobs: BMW (up to 2019) and Mercedes-Benz (cars up to 2014, vans up to 2018). Post-limit vehicles require manufacturer-level tooling not currently available to independent locksmiths. I confirm on the phone whether your vehicle is within scope before I travel — never after arriving and charging a callout fee. All other makes have no practical year limits for this job type.

Using Dealer-grade OBD equipment (or BMW Group OBD equipment for BMW), I extract IMMO data or generate from VIN, produce the new key blade, programme the transponder and delete all previous key codes from the ECU. The vehicle can only be started by the newly created key.
Test before leaving
I verify everything works correctly before leaving your location: new key starts the engine, all remote functions work, previous keys confirmed disabled. I don’t leave until you confirm you’re happy.
