Why Diagnosing Before Replacing Makes the Difference

Most key fob failures are attributed to a flat battery when the real cause is something else entirely. A depleted battery, a hairline crack in the PCB (printed circuit board), a failed antenna, or a loss of programming can all produce identical symptoms — the fob stops working, range drops to zero, or the car refuses to recognise it at all. Replacing the battery when the PCB is cracked wastes time and money. That is why the first thing I do on any fob job is diagnose, not replace.

Once the fault is identified, the resolution depends on what failed. A battery replacement takes five minutes and costs very little — I carry correct battery types for all fob models. A cracked PCB or failed antenna usually means a new housing is needed: I supply replacement shells for most common makes, transfer the working components across and reprogram the assembled fob to your vehicle. In cases where the fob is beyond repair, a replacement fob with the correct chip is sourced, fitted and programmed in the same visit. Both functions of the key — the transponder (engine start) and the remote (locking and unlocking) — are tested before I leave. A common issue is a fob where the battery replacement restores the remote function but the transponder still fails to start the engine. These are separate circuits and both need to be confirmed working. I carry the programming equipment to address either fault in the same visit.
