Battery Replacement — And What to Do When It Doesn’t Fix the Problem

A depleted fob battery is the most common cause of remote malfunction and also the most commonly mismanaged. Most drivers eventually attempt a battery replacement themselves — the right battery in the right fob, fitted the right way, usually restores function immediately. When it does not, the battery was not the root cause. The failure to recognise this wastes time and leads people to incorrectly conclude the fob needs replacing entirely.

Three other faults produce identical symptoms to a flat battery: a failed PCB or antenna inside the fob housing (no amount of battery changes will restore it), a lost pairing between the remote and the car’s central locking receiver (fitting a battery after a complete power loss sometimes requires reprogramming on certain platforms), and a fault in the car’s receiver module rather than the fob itself. I identify which of these applies on-site. If it is a straightforward battery replacement, I fit the correct battery and confirm function. If the fault runs deeper, I carry the repair equipment and programming machines needed to address it in the same visit. Thatcham Research notes that fob battery life varies significantly between makes, with some proximity systems drawing more continuous power than traditional remote keys.

For proximity and push-start fobs specifically, the battery specification matters more than it does for standard remotes. These systems require steady voltage rather than just above the minimum threshold — a battery at 70% charge may fail to trigger proximity unlock consistently even though it still has charge remaining. I carry correct battery types for all fob models, including CR2032, CR2025, CR2016 and the specialist batteries used in certain high-end proximity systems.
