ECU & Immobiliser Diagnostics
Central Scotland

Engine cranks but will not start. Immobiliser warning light stays on. Key is present but the car refuses to recognise it. These are classic IMMO symptoms — not engine faults. I diagnose and resolve immobiliser and ECU issues at your location using the Autel IM608 Pro.

Understanding Immobiliser Faults — And Why They’re Often Misdiagnosed

A vehicle immobiliser is an electronic security system that prevents the engine from starting unless the key’s transponder chip communicates the correct code to the ECU. When this communication breaks down — for any reason — the vehicle cranks normally but the engine cuts out within a second of attempting to start, or refuses to fire at all. This is routinely misdiagnosed as a starter motor fault, fuel pump failure or battery issue by drivers and general mechanics who focus on the engine rather than the security system.

Immobiliser faults have several distinct causes: a transponder chip failure inside the key itself, corrupted IMMO data in the ECU following a low-battery event or electrical fault, an ECU mismatch after a control unit has been replaced (by a garage or by the previous owner), or a programming error introduced during a previous key work attempt. The Autel IM608 Pro reads directly from the vehicle’s IMMO module, identifies which component in the chain has failed, and in most cases resolves it on-site. Thatcham Research publishes detailed information on how immobiliser systems are rated and certified if you want the technical context.

The important distinction to understand: an immobiliser fault is different from a lost keys situation and different from a mechanical ignition fault. IMMO diagnostics specifically addresses the electronic security system — the part that tells the ECU whether the key is authorised. If you have a key that was previously working and has suddenly stopped being recognised, or if a repair has introduced an IMMO fault, this is the service that applies.

The Process

How ECU & Immobiliser Diagnostics Works

Four steps from your call to driving away. Completed at your location in a single visit.

1

Call & confirm

Call 07949 827 795 or WhatsApp with your vehicle details and location. I confirm whether I can help, give you a realistic arrival time, and a price before I set off.

2

Kam travels to you

I travel directly to your location — home, work, car park or roadside. All equipment is in the van. No need to arrange recovery or travel to a workshop.

3

Fault read, diagnosed and resolved

Using Autel IM608 Pro I read your vehicle’s IMMO module data, identify the specific fault in the security chain, and resolve it. Where the issue is a key transponder failure, a replacement key is programmed in the same visit.

4

Test before leaving

I verify everything works correctly before leaving your location: engine starts and idles normally, IMMO warning light extinguished, key recognised consistently on multiple attempts. I don’t leave until you confirm you’re happy.

🔉

What Affects the Price

ECU and immobiliser diagnostic pricing depends on the complexity of the fault identified and the resolution required. A simple IMMO data recalibration differs in cost from a case where a replacement key or transponder must also be supplied. I give a price estimate on the call and confirm the final cost after diagnosis but before starting any repair work.

Price Confirmed Before I Travel

I give a price indication when you call — before I set off from Falkirk. What I quote on the phone is what you pay. No additional charges are added on arrival.

🏪

vs Main Dealer

Dealers typically charge £250–£450+ and require the vehicle to be towed to their workshop first. I attend your location and complete the job in a single visit — almost always at a lower total cost.
