What Car Key Programming Involves
Car key programming links a key’s internal transponder chip to your vehicle’s immobiliser system. Without programming, a correctly cut key will open the door but the immobiliser will prevent the engine from starting. Every modern car — including those with standard blade keys, flip-keys, proximity fobs and push-button start systems — requires this step. It is not optional and cannot be bypassed.
The programming process is carried out via the vehicle’s OBD port using make-specific equipment. Different manufacturers use different IMMO protocols — Volkswagen Group vehicles (VW, Audi, SEAT, Skŏda) require the VAG Group specialist programmer; Ford and Jaguar Land Rover use Specialist OBD equipment; BMW requires the BMW Group OBD equipment for advanced jobs; Mercedes-Benz uses Mercedes Group OBD equipment; and the Dealer-grade OBD equipment covers a wide range of remaining makes. Key programming is required in several scenarios: adding a spare key while keeping an existing working key, replacing a single lost or damaged key, programming a new remote fob after repair, and as part of any all-keys-lost job. In each case the process is completed on-site — I do not take keys or the vehicle away to a workshop.

Transponder programmed via OBD
Using the correct machine for your make, I programme the key’s transponder to your vehicle’s IMMO system via the OBD port. For spare key jobs this takes 15–30 minutes. For all-keys-lost programming, IMMO data extraction adds to the time.
Test before leaving
I verify everything works correctly before leaving your location: key starts the engine, remote locks and unlocks, proximity functions confirmed (where applicable). I don’t leave until you confirm you’re happy.

What Affects the Price
Programming costs depend on the make, model, IMMO generation and key type. Adding a spare key alongside an existing working key is less involved than an all-keys-lost scenario.
