Emergencies & Lockouts
Locked out or stranded right now? These answers cover what to do, how fast I can reach you, and what to expect.
Stay safe first — if you’re on a public road, move away from traffic before calling. Then call me on 07949 827 795. I’ll confirm I can help, give you a realistic arrival time, and a price before I set off. Do not attempt to force entry yourself — improvised tools (coat hangers, slim jims) damage lock barrels, window seals and door frames. I use specialist non-destructive entry tools that open your car without any damage to the vehicle. Police Scotland advise keeping a locksmith’s number saved for exactly this situation.
Response time depends on your location and my current job. For Falkirk, Grangemouth, Larbert and Stirling, I can typically attend within 30–45 minutes. For Edinburgh and Glasgow, expect 45–75 minutes. I always give you a realistic time estimate when you call — not the fastest-sounding figure. If the wait matters, tell me and I’ll be straight with you.
Yes. Every vehicle lockout job I attend uses non-destructive entry methods only. No drilling, no forcing, no improvised tools. Your lock barrel, door seals, window glass and paintwork are left completely undamaged. I only leave once you can confirm the door opens and closes normally.
Yes. Broken key extraction is a routine job. I safely remove the broken blade using specialist extraction tools without damaging the barrel, then cut and programme a replacement key on-site. Attempting to extract a broken key with pliers or glue typically damages the barrel and turns a simple job into a more expensive one.
A continuously triggering alarm is most commonly caused by a depleted key fob battery, a fault in the remote system, or an immobiliser issue. Call me on 07949 827 795 — I diagnose alarm and immobiliser faults using the Autel IM608 and resolve them at your location.
Key Replacement & Programming
Detailed answers on how car key replacement and programming actually works — from all-keys-lost to spare keys and fob repairs.
Yes — this is called an all-keys-lost job. Even with no working keys at all, I can create a new key from your vehicle’s IMMO data or VIN using the Autel IM608. The key is cut on-site and programmed to your vehicle. Once complete, all previous key codes are deleted from the ECU — so even if the original keys are found later, they can no longer start the car. This is a more involved process than adding a spare, and pricing reflects that.
Key programming (also called key coding or transponder programming) links a key’s electronic chip to your vehicle’s immobiliser system. Without programming, a key will fit the lock but will not start the engine. Every modern car key — including proximity, flip-key, push-start and standard blade keys — requires programming. Cutting alone is never sufficient. See our car key programming page for make-specific details.
Yes, and this is significantly quicker and cheaper than an all-keys-lost scenario. If you have a working key, I can programme an additional spare in one visit — typically 30–45 minutes. I’d strongly recommend getting a spare before you need one: a spare key made proactively costs far less than an emergency replacement after losing all keys.
Most key fob failures are battery-related, but not all. I diagnose the fault on-site: it could be a depleted battery, a cracked PCB, a failed antenna, or lost programming caused by a low vehicle battery. In most cases I can repair or replace the fob and reprogram it on-site. If the internal circuit has failed beyond repair, I supply a new housing with the correct chip and recode it to your vehicle.
Yes — I cover proximity entry and push-button start programming for most makes and models via Smart Pro, Xhorse VVDI2, ACDP and Autel IM608. A small number of the newest high-security systems (certain post-2021 vehicles) require manufacturer-level access that no independent locksmith currently has. I’ll always confirm whether your specific vehicle is within scope before I travel. See the car key programming page for details.
Key cutting produces the physical blade profile that fits your door lock and ignition barrel. Key programming links the electronic transponder chip inside the key to your vehicle’s immobiliser, allowing the engine to start. A working replacement key requires both. Some locksmiths cut keys without programming — the result opens your doors but the engine immobilises when you try to start.
Pricing & What to Expect
Transparent answers on costs, callout fees, and exactly what happens from the moment you call to the moment I leave.
Pricing varies significantly by make, model, year and the type of job required. An all-keys-lost scenario on a modern BMW or Mercedes is more involved than adding a spare key to a Ford Fiesta with an existing working key. I always give a price indication before I travel — call with your vehicle make, model, year and what you need, and I’ll give you an honest quote. What I can say: I am consistently cheaper than main dealer pricing for the same work. Dealers typically charge £250–£450+ and require towing to their workshop.
A small callout fee applies only in specific circumstances: if a job is cancelled after I have already set off, or if the situation on arrival is materially different from what was described on the call. I communicate this clearly before I travel — it is never presented as a surprise on arrival. Call me on 07949 827 795 and I’ll be transparent about all costs before committing to any booking.
Almost always, and by a significant margin. Main dealers charge £250–£450+ for most key replacement jobs and require you to have the vehicle transported to their premises first — adding towing costs. I attend your location, complete the work on-site in one visit, and charge less for the same outcome. The Citizens Advice guide on using a tradesperson is useful if you want to understand your rights when comparing quotes.
Yes — a receipt or invoice is available on request for every job. This is useful if you’re making a claim through your motor insurer or need a record for business vehicle expenses. Let me know when you call if you need documentation.
Your location or postcode, your vehicle’s make, model and year, and a description of the problem (locked out, lost all keys, need a spare, fob not working, etc.). For lost-keys jobs, let me know whether any working keys exist at all — this affects the job type and pricing significantly. That’s usually enough to confirm whether I can help and give you a quote.
Vehicle Makes We Cover
Specific answers on what I can do for the most common makes on UK roads — including year limits on all-keys-lost jobs.
Yes. I cover all BMW models for spare key programming, key fob repairs and lockouts. For all-keys-lost jobs, I cover BMW up to 2019 using the ACDP, which handles BMW BDC (Body Domain Controller) systems. Post-2019 BMW all-keys-lost requires manufacturer-level access not available to independent locksmiths. Call with your model and year and I’ll confirm immediately.
Yes. Mercedes-Benz spare key programming and fob repairs are covered for all years via Zedfull Plus. For all-keys-lost jobs specifically, I cover cars up to 2014 and vans (Sprinter, Vito) up to 2018. Post-2014 cars with newer Infinieon/NXP IMMO systems require manufacturer tooling. I always confirm before travelling.

About Rapid Lock Services
Questions about Kam, credentials, insurance and how Rapid Lock Services operates differently from other locksmiths.
My DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) certificate and £1M public liability insurance documentation are both available on request before I attend. You can verify my Google Business Profile independently — 36 verified reviews, all from real customers. I’m happy to share any documentation by WhatsApp before you confirm a booking. The Citizens Advice guide on tradespeople explains what questions to ask any tradesperson before work begins.
Yes — £1M public liability insurance covers every job I attend across Central Scotland. Documentation is available on request. This covers any unlikely damage or incident during the course of the work.
Vehicle locksmith work requires a completely different set of machines, software and training from residential locksmithing. The platforms, IMMO systems and programming protocols used in modern cars have almost nothing in common with door hardware. By focusing exclusively on auto locksmith services, I stay current with make-specific security systems, invest in the right equipment, and provide a genuinely specialist service rather than a generalist one.
Yes — commercial vehicle locksmith services cover Ford Transit (all variants), Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, Vauxhall Vivaro, Renault Trafic, Vauxhall Movano, Fiat Ducato, VW Crafter and more. Spare keys, all-keys-lost and programming for most commercial platforms. Fleet operators: call to discuss requirements.
Store proximity keys in a Faraday bag (signal-blocking pouch) when at home. Never leave keyless keys on a hook, windowsill or near a letterbox — relay devices can capture the signal through walls. A good steering wheel lock adds a visible deterrent. Police Scotland vehicle security advice covers relay theft prevention in detail. Thatcham Research rates vehicle security and publishes theft vulnerability data. Secured by Design lists approved security products for vehicles.
