Broken Key Extraction — Why Method Matters

A key blade breaks for one of two reasons: metal fatigue from years of use combined with any leverage applied during an awkward turn, or excessive force applied to a worn or stiff barrel. The blade is left inside the lock or ignition, blocking any operation of the barrel and leaving you unable to lock, unlock or start the vehicle. The broken portion is often lodged too deep to see clearly and sitting against the wafers in a way that makes it feel immovable.

The temptation is to use household tools — long-nose pliers, tweezers, glue on a matchstick or a bent wire. In the vast majority of cases, these approaches either push the blade fragment deeper into the barrel, score and damage the wafer surfaces, or introduce adhesive into the barrel mechanism. What began as a £80–£120 extraction job becomes a £300+ barrel replacement because the barrel is now damaged beyond recovery. I use specialist extraction tools designed specifically for automotive lock barrels that grip the fragment from inside the lock without touching the wafer surfaces.

Once the blade is extracted, I cut and programme a new key in the same visit. The replacement blade is cut to the barrel’s profile and the transponder is programmed via OBD to restore engine start function. If the extraction reveals barrel damage that was pre-existing — from wear or a previous attempt — I will assess whether barrel replacement is also needed and advise you before proceeding.
