Toyota Smart Key — Why Every Toyota Key Job Requires OBD Programming
Toyota has made Smart Key push-button start standard across virtually its entire range since approximately 2014. This is worth understanding clearly: there is no longer a physical key slot to turn in most Toyota models. The Smart Key fob communicates wirelessly with the vehicle’s IMMO system to authorise engine start. When a Smart Key is lost, damaged or needs to be added as a spare, programming via OBD is not optional — it is the only method. A cut blank key without programming will not start any Toyota made in the last decade.
The important clarification for Toyota hybrid and PHEV owners: the Yaris Hybrid, C-HR Hybrid, RAV4 PHEV and Prius use exactly the same Smart Key IMMO system as the equivalent petrol variants. What Affects the Price
Toyota key pricing depends on model, Smart Key type and whether an existing key is present. Smart Key AKL is more involved than adding a spare. Hybrid and PHEV pricing is identical to petrol equivalents — no premium for hybrid. Commercial Hilux and Proace jobs are priced on the same basis. Call with your Toyota model and year.
